Cocktail 2: Not Your Usual Rom-Com 'U/A' Vibe?
Okay, so we all knew Cocktail 2 was coming, and the buzz has been pretty real. Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon, Rashmika Mandanna – a fresh pairing, a beloved franchise name, and some seriously catchy music already making waves. Advance bookings opened on June 14, and everyone was gearing up for that June 19 release. But here’s the kicker, the one detail that really caught my eye: the film just snagged an ‘A’ certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Yeah, you read that right. An ‘A’ certificate for a rom-com sequel. The original Cocktail, remember that Saif-Deepika-Diana starrer from 2012? That one got a U/A. So, this is a pretty big shift, suggesting Cocktail 2 is going to be a lot more mature, perhaps even edgier, than its predecessor. The runtime is a solid 150 minutes, or two and a half hours, which is four minutes longer than the first film. Clearly, Homi Adajania and Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films have a lot to say this time around, and it looks like they’re not holding back.
Kriti Sanon's Bold New Territory & Rashmika's Second Round
This ‘A’ certificate is a pretty significant milestone for a few of our leading stars. For Kriti Sanon, in her 12-year career, this is her first-ever adult-rated film. Think about it – from Heropanti to Mimi, she’s largely stuck to family-friendly or U/A fare. Stepping into an 'A' film for a big franchise sequel like this? That’s a bold move, and honestly, it makes me even more curious about her role. Is she playing a character with more shades of grey? Is the humour going to be more adult? We’ll have to wait and see, but this definitely puts her in a new light.
Then we have Rashmika Mandanna. She’s no stranger to the 'A' rating, having just delivered a massive hit with Ranbir Kapoor in Animal last year. So, for her, this is her second 'A'-rated Hindi film. She clearly isn’t shying away from mature content, and after Animal’s success, why would she? It’s a smart play to continue exploring roles that push boundaries.
Shahid Kapoor: The 'A' List Regular?
And what about Shahid Kapoor? He’s practically a veteran on the 'A' list now. This is his fifth adult-rated film, joining the ranks of Kaminey (2009), Udta Punjab (2016), Kabir Singh (2019), and his last release, O'Romeo (2026). What’s really interesting here is that this makes it two consecutive adult-rated films for Shahid. He just wrapped O'Romeo, and now Cocktail 2. It seems Shahid is leaning into more complex, perhaps darker, or at least decidedly non-U/A characters these days. He even mentioned recently that he's playing an “extremely likeable, warm and endearing character” in Cocktail 2, which makes the 'A' rating even more intriguing. How do you combine 'likeable' with 'adult-rated' in a rom-com context? This has me genuinely excited, yaar.
So, there you have it. Cocktail 2 isn’t just a sequel; it’s a statement. An 'A' certificate means the makers are confident in their content and aren't afraid to cater to a more mature audience. Get ready for a ride that promises to be full paisa vasool, but maybe leave the kids at home for this one!
